“Domenico was provided with the panel for the painting for which he would be charged, along with other materials, from his payment o0f 115 florins. Her was to use good colours; the blue he used had to be ultramarine priced at 4 florins an ounce; and the gold was to be ground from leaf. He was to follow a design that had been provided, in all likelihood, by Ghirlandaio himself, and he was to finish the job in thirty months, on pain of a penalty of 15 florins. Fra Bernardo was to approve any change in composition and to judge the finished work. Ghirlandaio was to be paid 3 florins a month, beginning on November 1485.
The record book also preserves contracts with the other artisans who were involved in this very elaborate altarpiece. On 6 June, 1486 – probably the same day that the original contract was copied into the record book – Antonio di Francesco di Bartolo legnaiuolo (the sculptor Antonio da Sangallo) was contracted for an “adornamento di tavola”, for which he had supplied a design, and which was modelled on a similar frame for Ghirlandaio’s panel on the high altar of the church of the Gesuati. The framework included pilasters and freestanding columns and angels on either side, surmounted by a tabernacle for the host with flanking candle holders. Two years later, on 30 July 1488, the painter Andrea di Giovanni di Giorgio was commissioned to gild the altarpiece and frame; and the same day the painter Bartolomeo di Giovanni was commissioned to paint the predella, which had been originally part of Ghirlandaio’s task, but which, for an unknown reason, was reallocated – probably on Ghirlandaio’s recommendation – to Bartolomeo…”
Light blue Brocade fabric for the altar curtain is also recorded.
