Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Vincenzo Ulivieri

- Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Vincenzo Ulivieri
- Description
- This painting replaced Neri di Bicci’s Coronation of the Virgin at a time when the latter no longer reflected current taste. Donal Cooper suggests that the offer by Francesco del Pugliese, nephew of Piero – the patron of the opposite chapel – to buy Pietro Perugino’s Deposition from the nuns of Santa Chiara, Florence, might be explained as Francesco’s attempt to participate in the renewal of the Innocenti church, providing a pendant painting to Piero di Cosimo’s Sacred Conversation, patronised by his family. The nuns refusing his offer would have contributed to the commissioning of the Deposition to an artist familiar with the Innocenti’s entourage: Ulivieri was among the foundlings who had their upbringing in the hospital, and was employed by Prior Vincenzo Borghini as ‘home painter’.
