Description
Most of Florence’s toponomastics remain unchanged since the Renaissance; this is the case for street intersections, known as Canti.

Many of the Canti signalled a local feature such as the site for a guild or office (Canto del Proconsolo), or the location an activity (Canto de’ Banderai), or the residence of a prominent family (Canto de’ Carnesecchi). Canti were often adorned with religious images, which were (and some still are) the subject of public veneration. Images could depict Christ, the Madonna, or the patron saint of the neighbourhood, and were believed to protect city dwellers by casting their merciful gaze over the street. Such street shrines and tabernacles (in vernacular, tabernacoli or mostre), were maintained with lamps that lit both the images and the street corners.
This dataset was produced by the Open Data service of the municipality of Florence and is accessible via the link https://opendata.comune.fi.it/?q=metarepo/datasetinfo&id=defd761e-8882-47a2-8fcd-b01623d3cfa0. We included images for tabernacoli that still survive onsite.
