Giorgio Vasari’s Lives of the Artists continues to condition the way that we frame the history of art through biography.
This dataset is our first attempt at reconfiguring Vasari spatially by plotting all the instances of artworks that can be securely plotted to a site of display in Florence that are recorded by Vasari in the Lives. We’re planning to expand this dataset to include all artworks contained in his famous account, but at this stage you can only explore works produced in the fifteenth century (so mostly drawn from Part II). It is interesting to explore this data in comparison to other material - to note the incidence of artworks in the public realm (such as street shrines) or the focus on particular patrons or artists. - Is Part Of
